Wolf Gulch Farm

Farmer: Maud Macrory Powell and Tom Powell

I have been involved with agriculture since 1997, when Tom and I worked on a small family farm in Ladakh, Northern India. I grew up in Washington D.C. and had lived my whole life up until that point in cities, with no particular desire to live rurally. However, I grew to love rising early to help milk the family cow, irrigating the fields of barley, and walking into the distant valleys in the evening to retrieve the family's donkeys and goats. When we returned to the States, Tom and I were determined to buy a piece of mountainous land and farm organically. Within our first year home, we found Wolf Gulch, interned at Whistling Duck Farm, and had our first baby. While I love to help out with planting and harvesting, Tom is the brains and brawn behind the agriculture at Wolf Gulch. My interests lie in educating consumers about the importance of supporting local family farmers and helping to train new farmers.

Dirt road to Wolf Gulch farm fields with 3 small children holding hands, one carrying basket, mountains in the back ground and a evergreen tree framing the left of the picture.

When I am not taking care of the pre school age children, I like to play music and run.

We built our Straw Bail House, you can see a gallery of photos at Straw Bail.com
